WHAT IS AN ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT (ALSO KNOWN AS AN "ADU")?

Here are some quick facts about ADU's...

  • An Accessory Dwelling Unit is a secondary structure on your property that is legally permitted to be lived in by someone. They are essentially a guest house that can be used either by you, or rented out to someone else to generate rental income for you.
  • They are relatively new in the state of California and are the result of a bill that was passed toward the end of 2016.
  • An ADU can be created by either converting an existing structure (like a garage), or they can be built brand new from the ground up. However, even in the case of a garage conversion, all ADU's require inspections and permits which can be a headache to deal with for the inexperienced.
